There’s a moment every year when Dorset seems to take a deep breath.
The summer holidays come to an end, the roads quieten, and the beaches feel like they belong to the locals again. Mornings are a little fresher, the woodland begins to change colour and the pace slows just enough for you to notice the things you’ve been rushing past.
For us, it’s one of the loveliest times to be at Burnbake.
Wake to birdsong drifting through the trees, enjoy breakfast on your terrace with nothing but the sound of the forest around you, then head out to explore before returning to a peaceful evening beneath the stars. It’s Dorset without the queues, the traffic or the scramble for a parking space.
Stay your way
Whether you’re escaping for a romantic weekend, bringing the family together or pitching up under canvas, early autumn has a way of making every stay feel just that little bit more relaxed.
Our woodland lodges are made for slowing down, with private terraces, hot tubs and space to properly switch off. Rempstone Farmhouse is perfect for gathering everyone together, while the campsite settles into a quieter rhythm after the summer rush.
And don’t be fooled into thinking camping season is over. Some of the best days of the year arrive now – warm afternoons, comfortable evenings and crisp mornings that make that first cup of coffee somehow taste even better.
Dorset, without the crowds
One of the biggest pleasures of visiting at this time of year is having more space to enjoy it all.
The woodland trails are quieter; the heathland is alive with late summer colour and there’s no need to hurry. Wander through the forest, pause to watch the wildlife, or simply enjoy the freedom of following wherever the path leads.
Sometimes the best days are the ones where you don’t tick anything off a list.
Beaches you’ll want to linger on
Studland is beautiful all year round, but once summer draws to a close it feels different.
The sea has held onto its warmth, the sand stretches out in front of you and finding your own peaceful spot couldn’t be easier. It’s the perfect place for an early morning stroll, an afternoon paddle or simply sitting with a coffee, watching the tide roll in.
If you’re bringing your dog, they’ll probably tell you it’s the best time of year too. Longer walks, more room to roam and plenty of sandy paws before heading back to Burnbake.
Adventure starts outside your door
One of the best things about staying here is that you don’t have to travel far to find somewhere beautiful.
Walk to Old Harry Rocks, spend a day exploring Durlston Country Park or lose yourself on the countless woodland paths surrounding Burnbake. Whether you’re after a gentle wander or a full day’s hike, the cooler days make exploring even more enjoyable.
And if you’d rather swap walking boots for two wheels, quiet country lanes and woodland tracks lead towards Studland, Corfe Castle and beyond. There’s no timetable, just plenty of opportunities to stop whenever something catches your eye.
A slower afternoon in Corfe Castle
No visit is complete without a wander around Corfe Castle.
Without the summer crowds, you can take your time exploring the historic ruins, browsing the independent shops or settling into a café for an unhurried coffee and cake before wandering back through the village.
It’s the sort of place that rewards slowing down.
Evenings you’ll remember
Some of our favourite moments happen after the adventures are over.
As the evenings become cooler, light the firepit, toast marshmallows, sink into the hot tub or simply sit on the terrace listening as the forest settles for the night.
It’s often these simple moments our guests talk about long after they’ve gone home.
A taste of Dorset
This is a wonderful time to enjoy Dorset’s food scene too.
Think fresh seafood by the coast, cosy country pubs, village cafés and farm shops, all within easy reach. Pick up local treats for lunch, stop for homemade cake after a walk or enjoy dinner overlooking the sea before heading back to your woodland retreat.

Nature puts on a show
As summer fades, the landscape changes almost daily.
The heath begins to glow, birds of prey wheel overhead and, if you’re lucky, you might spot deer quietly moving through the trees at dusk.
It’s a season that gently encourages you to slow down and pay attention.
Why we love this time of year
The forest feels calmer. The beaches feel quieter. There’s more space to explore, more time to switch off and a little less pressure to do everything.
Whether you’re relaxing in a luxury lodge, gathering everyone at Rempstone Farmhouse or sleeping beneath canvas with the sounds of the forest around you, this is Dorset at its most peaceful.
Morning coffee on the terrace. Fish and chips by the sea. A walk beneath the pines. Stars appearing as the fire crackles nearby.
